Scene 03 Shot 01

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
Continued working on this shot, worked on the perspective more and checked with Frans heaps to check that it is working. I made changes to the way Demetrius catches himself after the small stumble. I also moved Demetrius and the Beast further up in the frame as it matches the perspective of the BG more (Frans helped me so much!).

We also had a talk with Matthew Darragh, he went over our animatics and gave us feedback, he suggested getting rid of that pause after the monster is revealed to keep up the pace. He also said to make it more obvious that Demetrius hates the girl and to show more emotion in the circus part. He also said that perhaps she should have a sad expression when she first appears in the mirror.

Scene 03 Shot 06 finished and Scene 03 Shot 01

Continued working on the same shot I was working on last week. I showed it to Frans and did some inbetweens/breakdowns for it. Frans changed some of the timing of the shot and got rid of a few inbetweens to make it faster, but we both agreed that the audience needs time to realize that Demetrius hits the tree and falls back, so we kept the one I did but added another stretch for when Demetrius hits the tree.

Did some more Passes for Demetrius but I'm having a hard time figuring out angles and what not. I might ask Frans for help tomorrow.

Gino suggested making Demetrius stumble again when he turns at the tree, I like the idea and tried it out, it still looks off, I'm having a hard time with Perspective...

Scene 03. Shot 04 Rough Animation and Scene 04, Shot 05

SCENE 04, SHOT 05
FOURTH PASS
I continued to work on Scene 04, Shot 05, trying to fix up the arm movement and body proportions, but I didn't like the moment of it anymore and it seemed too much of a sneak rather than an exposed walk backwards. I showed it to Frans and he agreed, he said to try out another pass with the arms behind him, and his body leaned more back rather than forward.

I tried out making him up straight, walking backwards, but the steps were too small...


SCENE 03, SHOT 04
This shot is only 15 frames long, so I made the turn longer,so it is more obvious that the character is turning to see the Beast.

I made the character look back twice to add to the pace.

Scene 04 Shot 05 and updated animatic with rough animation

I continued working on Scene 04, Shot 05, adding details and making sure the body is on model, i will go over it again and fix up little things, I think some of the legs/body is not quite on model and the poses look a bit weird. I also think his head would have more turn and wouldn't sit still while he walks backwards.

Scene 04, Shot 05

SCENE 04, SHOT 05
I started going over Scene 04, Shot 05's Gesture, I checked the Gesture animation with Frans and he liked it, so my goal is to finish that shot today

I worked on the second pass and Gino suggested adding a sqiush and holding it for longer when he gets up and to play around with the timing more.


THIRD PASS
I went over the second pass, making sure the legs are the same size and matching it more to the modelsheet.


FOURTH PASS
I started working on the fourth pass, I mainly focused on keeping the body on model, I think the head looks weird if I just copy it, I will give it more turn tomorrow.

Run Cycle and Gesture for Sc06 Sh11

I continued working on the run cycle for Shots 05, 06, 03, 04  Scene 04.
I checked with Frans throughout the day, making sure it worked, I made changes to the head movement as well as the down position and up.


RUN CYLE
Gino suggested changing some of the timing, I tried it out and put a few of the frames on ones and the down and up position on two's.

I did another pass over it and added Demetrius' details, I tried out the Zebra stripes and I think it works quite well. I think the run might be too fast, I might try out and out in two's again. I personally like the one on two's better, but I will check with my team and Frans in the morning.

I started some gesture work for Scene 06, Shot 11, at first I tried out a jump while running, but remembered that we wanted a different jump for that shot.

Run Cycle again and Scene 04, Shot 15

I continued working on the run cycle for Scene 03, Shots 05, 06, 03, 04. I checked with Frans throughout the day, and made changes. I looked at the treasure planet run a lot more and tried to base it off that one. I also took a break and went back to it, an dtried to get into that mind set of running away from something terrifying, Frans said he will go over the run cycle with me tomorrow.






I started rough animation for scene 04, shot 15, it looks weird, it looks like Demetrius is jittering rather than pulling away from the Beast.

I tried out Scene 03, Shot 01 as well, I had a hard time doing the run for Demetrius, I think I followed the storyboard a bit too much, in terms of positioning, I feel like Demetrius runs too fast, I followed the timing of the Animatic but I feel it should be slowed down a little.


I also did my first pass for Scene 04, Shot 05, I looked at the reference video we did of Mike walking backwards, it helped a lot!

Scene 04, Shot 11 and Run cycle

Sheran went over our Review today, and Liam and me decided to make one person Key Animator and one Inbetweener. Liam is more confident doing inbetweening and I'm more confident-ish doing Key Animation.
I finished my rough animation for Scene 04, Shot 11, and am going to work on Key Animation for as many shots as I can.

I did two different passes, I showed them to Frans and he liked the second one better, I refined it a bit more and tested out the stripe detail on Demetrius as well.

SCENE 02, SHOT 05
I realized that I forgot to animate the eyes for this shot, so I went over it quickly today.


SCENE 03 SHOT 03
I started tackling one of the hardest shot, the sideview of Demetrius running away from the beast. I had no idea how to start a run cycle so I looked up the run cycle from the Animator's survival kit, and copied it. Once I copied the run cycle, getting down the the idea of it, I looked up the Treasure Planet chase scene which helped heaps with giving the run cycle personality. I also looked up Atlantis .
I tried doing a similar run cycle from the stroyboard, I think Demetrius twists too much, and leans forward to much. I will ask Frans to give me a hand with that tomorrow.

Finished 3 rough animations! Started editing Beast Modelsheet

Finished Rough Animations for Scene 06, Shot 03, 10 and Scene 02, Shot 05.

Went over the animation I did last week, and refined it a bit more.

At first I thought of having the character perfectly still, but Liam suggested adding breathing, and making the character move ever so slightly to make it look less dead. I think it works really well.

Finished animating this shot, played around with the fire effects, Frans came over and helped me. I also looked at how cats flick their tail when they're in "attack mode". I like how the flames turned out, not too sure about the tail movement, I'll show this to Liam and Danielle and see what they think.


BEAST MODELSHEET
I started going over Danielle's Modelsheet, and just made slight adjustments, I was trying to figure out how the skull works, but also how high the shoulder come up. The modelsheet looks great otherwise, Danielle did an awesome job :)

Scene 06 Shot 10 Rough Animation

This morning Liam updated the animatic with pour animated shots we have done so far. I also updated a Background List for us, Danielle is doing most Backgrounds. We also decided on a more simple style for the backgrounds, we mainly looked at Samurai Jack and "Dream Worlds Book".
We like simple but quite artsy backgrounds, showing brush strokes and a lot of colour/mood and atmosphere.
