Scene 06 Shot 05

SCENE 06 SHOT 05

I started animating Scene 06, Shot 05 today. I started in the morning, and went over it later on that day. (lectures, life drawing :P)

ROUGH (FIRST PASS)
As I started animating this shot, I wanted to add more perspective to the way he leans forward. I went over the movement a couple of times to get the right shapes etc. Gino and Liam helped me get the shapes moving in perspective.

 FINAL ROUGH ANIMATION
I went over the rough shapes, and mainly focused on the expressions first. This shot in our film is really important, I think as the audience has to see what the character is feeling. I had a lot of fun experimenting with the expressions. I also tried adding a little sigh after he closes his eyes, but me and Danielle both agreed that the sigh took away from his emotion.

Animatic and Scene 02 shot 11

SCENE 02, SHOT 11
I started working on Scene 02, Shot 11. In the animatic it is a still image of the main character, surprised, but I felt there should be some movement. I made the character go back in surprise. I had a settle after the stretch, but Liam and Frans both thought it would be better to leave it with the stretch as the settle took away from it. Liam suggested making the eyebrows rise and the pupils go smaller. I think it works well.

ANIMATIC
Liam noticed that some of the timing of the animatic was a bit off. Me and Liam went through the animatic, making little changes, changing the duration of some shots and also screen position for one particular shot.
I went through the animatic and cut out all the bits we need for the animation.

Beast Modelsheet

BEAST MODELSHEET

I started going over the beast animation again, and realized that there were a couple of little things wrong with the modelsheet. I went over it with Frans, and he suggested making it more simple, solid shapes. The back legs were  a biggy, so I looked at "Scar" from the Lion King and skinny lions, figuring out how the shapes work. I tried adding a neck to the beast as well, just so it will be easier to animate him looking.

I ended up doing a rough modelsheet for the Beast. I will check with Frans in the morning.

Background Layout

Continued to work on my background today. I looked at Danielle's style of backgrounds, and tried my best to keep her style. I looked at Birsh trees and how their patterns work and tried it out on the trees. The colours of the bg are light just for the lineart of the roots of the trees. I want the roots to resemble hands, to give it a creepy feeling but also for the story purpose.
I am also working on making the ditch work in the style we are going for.

Scene 02 Shot 10

Scene 02 Shot 10
I continued going over the Monster's sneak movement, and asked my teammates for feedback. The movement of the back legs of the monster was too much the same of the forelegs, Daniellle helped me out with the legs movement.

Scene02, Shot 09 Rough Animation and Lion walk for Monster

Scene 02, Shot 09

I went over the gesture rough I did yesterday, and made it more on Model. The eyes move a bit and the ears, but I will fix that when it comes to clean up, I don't want to spend too much time on such a short shot.

Scene 02, Shot 10

I started working on the Beast's walk today. I looked at Lion walk cycles and tried having a go at animating an overall lion walk. I later decided to put more of the Beast's personality into the walk, making the walk more predator like.

FIRST ROUGH
This was the first rough I did, I looked at a walk cycle of a Lion and animated it. I found that the movement wouldn't fit the atmosphere of the shot.

SECOND ROUGH
I tried matching the movement to the pose in the Animatic, but I found it too restricting and the movement seems off.

THIRD ROUGH
Gino suggested looking at the "Lion King" scene :pouncing lesson, where Simba stalks the prey and then pounces. I looked at predator walks from an actual Lion as well, and tried animating it. I wanted to add a bit more of the Beast's personality to the walk as well, so I made the movement of the legs a bit more extreme.

Background

Rough Animation for Scene 02 Shot 09

I tried out different movements for the shot, and showed my team mates. They all liked the one where he tilts his head. I went to show Frans and he suggested making the movement more subtle as the shot is very short. I showed him my first gesture I did, and he said to go with that. I tried out one where the character just squints and stays at the same place but the camera slowly zooms in, but Frans said that if we were to do this, we would have to update the Animatic and the Storyboard to match. I decided to go with the first animation he suggested at first, because when I started animating the head staying still and the eyes squinting, I found it looked to unnatural, so I wanted a little movement with the shot.

FIRST ROUGH
When I talked to Frans about this animation he said there was just too much movement for such a short amount of time, and it wouldn't add the suspense the animatic does.

SECOND ROUGH
I felt that for this animation there was just not enough overall head movement, and when just the face moves it looks unnatural.

THIRD ROUGH (FIRST GESTURE)
Frans liked this animation the most, and I think it works well for the shot, as the movement isn't too much, and very subtle.

Storyboard Template and Animatic

Today I worked on sorting through the storyboard panels, and putting them in the Storyboard template. I also fixed the Animatic with Liam, with a zoom out at the start, and adding another frame.
Zack and me worked till late getting the duration and shots/scenes correctly on the storyboard template.
