Scene 03 Shot 01 Rough Clean up

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
Continued doing rough clean up. Didn't get as much done as I wanted to today. I will work more tomorrow.

ANDREW GORDON
Did some research on Andrew Gordon and listened to some interviews with him. It was really interesting and I'm also starting to think of a few ideas I could ask him for the semi-permanent.

Showreel

I decided to spent today to do my showreel.

      • PIPELINES AND TECHNIQUES
      •   Talk about the process of the project. Eg Day 1 compared to Day NOW
      • Challenges in the group and how we overcame them eg. Stroyboard – too many ideas, learning to delegate people's strengths
      • Specialist role: Storyboarding
      • Skills: cinematography/storyboarding
      • Production: Clean up, rough animation, background concepting, texturing
      • I'd like to learn more about how colour can affect mood/atmosphere eg The Incredibles
    • COLOR THEORY
    • Warm vs cool colours – eg The chase, contrast between characters, cold character Demetrius, warm character Lionell
    • Background – Forest blue, purple colours, green – almost horror palette adding blue to balance
  • SHAPE LANGUAGE
  •  I used soft shapes (chest, body, arms) to apply him as a good guy. I gave him a big chest to suggest heroism.
  • I also used sharp shapes (face, eyes, hair, stripes) to suggest some danger, I made these shapes more subtle than the soft shapes so he appears as the good guy, but as the story continues we learn that he is not as good as he seems. I wanted him to look like the good guy from first glance, but as you look closer at his design he looks more torn between good and bad.
  • I tried making his eyes look zebra-like
  • I used dark blues, and greys to make him look quite “villianious”
    Environment
  • LIFE DRAWING
  •   I learned to explore different medias in lifedrawing, I tried out line drawing and learnt it helped my obseravtional skills, and to draw what you see and feel rather than draw everything “correctly”. This helped me apply it to my animations, to feel every movement.
  • It helped me strengthen my poses for animation, knowing how far apart the legs are and how weight affects the body.
  • I learnt how lighting gives different moods to both lifedrawing and animation, if you make the shadows very sharp and dark it gives quite a depressing mood while soft shading gives it a lighter mood. I tried applying this knowledge to my storyboards.

Scene 03 Shot 01, Rough Shapes for Clean up Finished! Start on Rough Clean up (Details)

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
I finished the Rough Shapes for this shot, ready for details (rough clean up). I started adding details to the face/hands and made little adjustments to some curves of the body (legs.arms and torso). I'm quite pleased to how the rough shapes look. I think it looks better than the rough animation I did before.
I worked on the rough shapes yesterday and finished them this morning, and started doing rough clean up today.

ROUGH CLEAN UP

BACKGROUND
I tried out doing a concept for a Background, I like the colours but I feel it needs to be way more stylized. I think it needs to be more simple and yet detailed. Gino suggested to make the edges sharper. I will have another play around with it tomorrow and get Frans' opinion on it as well.

GROUP MEETING
We had a group meeting this morning where both of our Tutors talked to us about how our project is going. They both said to get what we need to pass finished and then work on the rest of the project when we have time. But to make our shot that we need to submit to pass the best one.
We were also told that Danielle might not be returning :'(

Rough Clean up, Review and Storyboard

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
Got quite far with my rough clean up today. I wanted to keep working on it but flash kept crashing on me :( I'm going to finish it tomorrow before lunchtime and start clean up.

REVIEW
Had our Review today, Dane suggested making changes to the start of the storyboard, showing that Demetrius is torn between his emotions and that he runs and then slows down as he enters the forest. His expression changes to angry and then he swipes into 2D, making that transition real clear as well.  Dane also said to add an extreme close up of Demetrius' eyes, showing his decision making. And another shot of Demetrius' behind showing that his sister is in the spotlight and him in the dark really clearly. I made some rough storyboard panels for it. We still have to put it in our animatic to see how it matches with the rest.

Rough Clean up and Updates Animatic

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
I continued going over the frames and fixing them up, making them more on model. I made sure that the movement flowed nicer and that it as a lot smoother. I'm quite happy with it :)

UPDATED ANIMATIC
I updated the Animatic and put in all the shots we have been working on. I had to re-locate some animations and fix up some things in the animatic, ready for the review on Monday.

Rough Clean Up again and Expression Sheet

SCENE 03 SHOT 01
I showed Frans my rough clean up so far and got some feedback for one of the poses, but as I looked at my all of rough clean up again I noticed that it wasn't as good as it could be. I jumped straight into detail instead of getting the proportions and construction down first. I went over the rough again and started with construction and proportions. I think going straight into detail was really difficult and that's probably why it took me so long as well.

OLD FRAMES
I had a lot of difficulty drawing there because I jumped straight into detail instead of worrying about one thing after the other.

NEW ROUGH CLEAN UP (CONSTRUCTION AND PROPORTIONS)
I started just doing the rough construction for Demetrius, making sure they all have the same proportions and improving the movement, I made the head face forward in the second frame so that the head doesn't suddenly jump into looking back in the third frame. I also tried making the poses stronger and making sure that all the arms/legs etc are the same size. Although I think Demetrius' head is too big in the second frame compared to the first one.

EXPRESSION SHEET
I did an expression sheet for Demetrius, to help me understand how his head shape works and how far his expressions can go.

Scene 03 Shot 01 Clean Up and Clean Up Guide (Construction)

CLEAN UP
Continued working on rough clean up, getting the proportions right and adjusting the length of arms/legs.

CONSTRUCTION FOR DEMETRIUS
As I started clean up I noticed that some parts of Demetrius are quite difficult to get right (keeping the feet consistent) so I made a little guide of the Feet, hands, face and mouth shapes.

Scene 02 Shot 04, Review and Bridging

Scene 02 Shot 04
I continued working on this shot, I showed it to my group and also got Frans to have a look at it. Frans and Liam suggested making the squash and the stretch more extreme and have Demetrius slow into the anticipation and stretch.

REVIEW
We were exporting our updated animatic for the review when we were called in for it. The animatic was too late so we didn't get much feedback on it, but for some reason the animatic didn't play properly on the big screen but worked on our own computers. We felt real bad for not having completed the animatic sooner, we will get it done on time for next week.

BRIDGING
We had the Bridging evening tonight, and found out that the bridging course will be only gaming (no world building or character and narrative). I was quite upset about this at first but I think doing gaming would be challenging and we would get an understanding of character, narrative and world building all in one.

Scene 02 Shot 04

SCENE 02 SHOT 04
Worked a little more on this shot, got some feedback from my boyfriend about the timing for it. I changed it to be less smooth and added a little jump for when Demetrius hears the crack and a fast turn after.

Texturing and Scene 02 Shot 04

TEXTURING
Continued texturing, tried adding more reds to the body and adding details to the hair and fur.

SCENE 02 SHOT 04
I added a blink in at the start of the walk and tried making the proportions match.

Scene 02 Shot 04 and Texturing

SCENE 02 SHOT 04
I continued working on this shot today, going over the proportions and adding some breakdowns.

TEXTURING
I tried out some texturing for the female character. I tried out adding some red to her skin and the more paintly style

Scene 02 Shot 04?

SCENE 02 SHOT 04
Started working on this shot, and decided to get some reference. I rotoscoped over it and then changed the proportions to match Demetrius.
